Akil Mitchell, a talented 6'7 combo forward of Charlotte Christian, committed to Tony Bennett and the University of Virginia. Tony Bennett and Asst Coach Ron Sanchez visited Charlotte Christian yesterday and extended the offer to Akil. After speaking with his Father, Akil called Coach Bennett and committed to the Cavaliers tonight.
Akil told ScoutsFocus that, "Everything seemed to fit; the area, the academics and the level of basketball." He also added to why he pulled the trigger so quickly was because of "Coach Bennett and his honesty, and he is a genuine guy that I could see my self playing for the next four years." In terms of what he wanted to add to UVA's program, he said, "I want to come in and make an impact, I'm kind of a sleeper, I just want to surprise as many people as I can."
Mitchell's basketball story was full of ups and downs. He was a late bloomer whose first year on an actual team was the tenth grade in high school where he transferred to Charlotte Christian from a local public school. He got cut both years in Middle School and was hurt his 9th grade year.
Akil added, "I'm ready to surprise some people, I'm a underdog, I'm ready to get after it and work hard." He sports a 4.1 GPA and his immediate goal is to win the state championship. Mitchell will have a strong crew around him with High Major talent Anthony Gill(another possible 2011 UVA target), and a talented backcourt of Reynolds Maharajh and Chavis Cliette. Mitchell doesn't turn 18 until the end of next June.
Scouting Reports on Mitchell:
HS 08-09: Mitchell is a very athletic and long prospect who can score going to the basket off the bounce. Mitchell needs to tighten up his handle and improve his shot and are two areas improve over the summer.
Carolina Challenge 09: Attacked the basket well of the bounce and showed he could play in a setting featuring nationally ranked prospects. Late bloomer and a bit under exposed, his recruitment could heavily pick up this July with the right breaks. His game could easily translate to the SF spot with a bit more refinement. Love the upside on Mitchell. When his shot becomes consistent from deep and his handle tightens, high level schools should take note.
Southern Invitational May 09: Mitchell loves to get out and run the floor. He uses the L-Rip move really effectively. He is a good rebounder who loves to grab the defensive board and push the ball up the court himself and would thrive in a college setting that would allow him to do that. He has the ability to knock down a 3 or mid range two here and there and is really active. Excellent Student.
June 09: Long athlete with an improving skill level. He showed he could be a threat from two levels of the court. One instance, he mixed in a nice back to the basket power move, then he showed he could hit the pull up mid range jumper over a defender. His three point shot was not falling as is had been the previous weekend but he did not miss by much. His body is still filling out but his potential remains to be seen.
June 09: Had an excellent weekend where he knocked in the mid range jumper off the bounce, the three ball and constantly attacked the rim. At times, he tries to do too much but he has excellent potential as a possible SF at the next level when he hones up his skills. He is a good defensive rebounder that loves the take the ball off the rim and push it himself and put pressure on the defensive fastbreak. Love his potential at the next level when you mix in his size and athleticism.
